This week begins a new year of Families Learning Together.

FLT is a practical, skills-based approach to helping young parents finish their schooling, gain employment, learn how to keep commitments in both professional and personal relationships, and set and meet the goals that will lead them toward a sustainable, independent existence for themselves and their families.

There’s nothing magical about the process, but sometimes it seems like it.

Ten young parents have enrolled in this program this year, so far. These ten parents will get tutoring toward their high school degree and beyond. They will receive help in finding a job. They’ll learn about child development and how it pertains to their own parenting styles. They’ll be taught how to create a budget and stick to it, how to cook nutritious meals, and how to drive. Housing, transportation, addiction issues, abuse – FLT can touch any and all aspects of their lives with which they need help.

The best part of all is the social support they’ll find at The Family Place. Changing your life can be a lonely endeavor; it can be confusing to the people who know you the best when you decide to break free of negative patterns and harmful habits. In FLT you accomplish this with the support of trained professionals and other parents going through the same process.

The staff at The Family Place watch all year as these young parents develop the skills they need to succeed in life. There’s nothing magical about the process, but sometimes it seems like it.
