Here at The Family Place we measure success in varying increments. Some days success looks like a participant remembering to call when she’s going to be late. Some days success looks like choosing salad over dessert. Some days success is a child’s first time catching a ball, after months of developmental therapy.

And then there are the larger successes. Last week we had a lunchtime celebration on Valentine’s Day, not because of the candy-heart holiday but because a participant in Families Learning Together had achieved a major milestone. Two of them, actually!

First, Thursday marked her one year of sobriety. A year of attending daily meetings and working hard to form positive habits, a year of saying no to drugs and alcohol and yes to her own health and that of her child, a year of accepting support from people who care about her. This a huge accomplishment!

Second, she saved enough money to purchase her own car. Transportation is a major factor in sustainable independence. No longer does she need to depend on rides from friends, public transportation, or the TFP van. She can drive herself and her child wherever they need to go.

Success can be as small as a moment or as large as a year. We are so very proud of all the families we watch achieve their goals!
