One of the most popular work sites in our Families Learning Together program is the kitchen work site, where young mothers and fathers learn to prepare healthy meals for themselves and their families. The food they prepare in our commercial kitchen here at The Family Place is shared among participants, staff and guests at a family-style, sit-down lunch four days a week.
Every other week, participants bring the kitchen to their children in The Family Place Child Care Center. Last week was Pizza Day! English muffins, tomato sauce, cheese and pepperoni make great ingredients for little hands to create little pizzas. While these 2- and 3-year-old chefs may not understand that food preparation is part of a healthy lifestyle, the habits they’re exposed to now may influence how they eat for the rest of their lives. If they can be introduced to healthy food preparation at an early age, they have a better chance at continuing to eat well into the future.
