For people living in poverty, transportation can be a major challenge.  How does a pregnant teenager get herself to her prenatal appointments if she doesn’t have her license?  How does a mother drop her toddler off at child care and get herself to work without a car? Often, family members aren’t able to provide this kind of practical support.

One way we at The Family Place address the problem of transportation is to provide driver’s education for the participants of our Families Learning Together program. The class is set up to encourage success; it’s built into the FLT curriculum and offered on-site. Once they have completed the 6-hour class they’ll need ten hours of practice on the road. In the spring, they’ll be ready to pass the test!

Attendance is steady and the women are focused; they realize this is an important step toward independence. A driver’s license opens up many doors in terms of housing, employment, and education.
