Last week the commercial kitchen at The Family Place hosted a visit from John Mazzucco, the Senior Public Health Sanitarian for this region ofVermont. John explained to our Families Learning Together participants the importance of food safety in home kitchens, and answered many questions. By all accounts John was an entertaining presenter and offered many stories of mishaps, along with advice on how to avoid those mishaps.

 Our kitchen workstation is one way the young parents of FLT learn to take care of both themselves and their children. Margo O’Day, our kitchen supervisor, helps them plan healthy meals and teaches them ways of safely preserving food. And, of course, they cook! Four days a week, TFP staff members are treated to a delicious lunch from the kitchen.

 Studies have shown that a family meal is a major contributing factor to a child’s health and well being. By helping young parents develop the skills they need to plan, cook, and serve a healthy meal in their own homes, we’re contributing to a healthier – and happier – future generation.
