The events in Newtown, Conn. last Friday have given us all a reason to pause here at The Family Place. Children are the reason we come to work every day; they are the first spark behind our chosen careers in family services, and the majority of us are parents. When we hear about school children becoming victims of a violent attack, it breaks our hearts and leaves us shaken.

Many parents and caregivers are looking for ways to talk with their children about what happened in Newtown, or about tragedy in general. Many psychologists agree that children under seven years old don’t need to be told about the killings. They are too young to comprehend the facts. If they ask, or express fear and anxiety, then start a simple conversation, but if they are unaffected, let them remain so.

Older children will probably hear about events at school or on the playground, so a talk with a trusted adult could preempt worried reactions. However, constant exposure to television and radio stories about the event won’t help. Hearing the facts repeated will only cause more fear.

Reassure your children they are safe. Talk to them about the people who are always on their side: teachers, school principals, police officers, family members.

Here are a few sources for more information on talking to children about tragic events. And please remember: the events in Newtown are heartbreaking and reprehensible, but children may be exposed to trauma much closer to home, and on a more regular basis. Talk with your kids every day. Show them you are willing to engage in any conversation they may need to have. Then, whenever they need help, it will be natural for them to come to you.
